Leather color according to vehicle manufacturer

When it comes to automotive leather, not all black is created equal. Vehicle manufacturers use different shades, leather types, and gloss levels. For the most authentic result, choose a leather color that matches the vehicle manufacturer and the actual interior trim.

Important: Select the appropriate leather color

A visible color designation like "black", "beige", or "gray" is not always sufficient for vehicle leather. Depending on the manufacturer, model, year of manufacture, type of leather, and interior fittings, different shades of color may have been used.

If the exact color is unknown, check the vehicle documentation or contact the vehicle manufacturer to inquire about the leather color. For furniture and other custom leather colors, a color sample may be required for identification.

How to properly prepare and dye leather

  1. Clean: Thoroughly remove dirt and surface residues.
  2. Degreasing: Remove oils, silicones and old care products.
  3. Prepare: Carefully mattify and smooth any shiny or rough areas.
  4. Fill damages: Treat deep scratches, cracks or indentations with liquid leather beforehand.
  5. Dyeing: Apply leather dye in several thin layers using a sponge, brush or suitable spray system.
  6. Dry: Allow each layer to dry completely; if necessary, gently assist the drying process with a hairdryer.
  7. Seal: Protect the new coat of paint against abrasion with a suitable leather sealant.

For which types of leather is this color unsuitable?

Do not use on Alcantara, suede, nubuck or open-pore aniline leather. For unknown leather or imitation leather, compatibility must first be tested on a hidden area.

Frequently asked questions about leather dye

Is it possible to dye leather yourself?

Pigmented smooth leather and many suitable synthetic leather surfaces can be refreshed in color with careful preparation. Crucial steps include cleaning, degreasing, applying thin coats of color, and subsequent sealing.

Does leather dye cover scratches and color abrasion?

Superficial color wear and light scratches can be touched up with leather dye. Noticeable indentations, cracks, and holes must first be filled and smoothed with a suitable repair compound.

Is universal black suitable for every car?

Not always. BMW, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, VW, Volvo, and other manufacturers use different shades of black, leather, and gloss. For the most accurate repair, the manufacturer's original paint color should be chosen.

Does leather dye need to be sealed?

For high-traffic areas such as car seats, steering wheels, armrests, sofas, and clothing, we recommend a suitable leather sealant. It improves abrasion resistance and protects the new color layer.

Can you dye synthetic leather?

Many intact synthetic leather surfaces can be treated. Since the structure and coating vary considerably, adhesion must first be tested on an inconspicuous area. Peeling or extensively deteriorated coatings cannot be reliably restored with paint.

How do I find the right leather color?

For vehicles, the color should be determined based on the manufacturer, model, interior trim, or vehicle documentation. For furniture, clothing, and custom leather goods, a suitable color sample may be necessary. Color representations on monitors are often insufficient for an accurate match.
