The VILOU black leather dye included in the set is a deep, standard black shade. However, black leather shades can vary depending on the vehicle manufacturer, model, equipment, leather type, and year of manufacture. Therefore, VILOU black is not automatically identical to every factory-installed black leather dye.
If you wish to preserve the original manufacturer's color as closely as possible, please first check whether the matching leather color is already available in our vehicle categories. If possible, inquire about the color beforehand with the vehicle manufacturer based on the vehicle's specifications.

Matte Black
For the typical low-reflection, factory-like look of many modern leather steering wheels. Matte is often the right choice if the steering wheel was not originally visibly glossy.
Gloss black
For leather steering wheels whose original surface intentionally has a higher gloss level. The glossy finish is not automatically necessary for a steering wheel that has become greasy from skin oils.
Recommendation: Check the original luster level on a lightly used area. A greasy sheen in the handled areas is usually a sign of skin oils, deposits, and surface wear – not the original luster of the leather.

Repairing a leather steering wheel in five steps
Degrease thoroughly
Completely remove skin oils, dirt, silicone, and any existing product residue. A clean surface is crucial for adhesion.
Prepare the surface
Carefully roughen smooth and uneven areas with the sanding pad. Do not sand too hard and avoid the seams.
Apply leather dye thinly
Apply the chosen leather dye in several very thin layers using the sponge. Avoid thick layers of dye.
Dry each layer
Allow each layer of color to dry completely. A hairdryer can aid drying on a low heat setting.
Sealing leather
After the paint has completely dried, apply a thin layer of leather sealant and then allow it to dry and harden completely.
Important usage instructions
- Test all products on an inconspicuous area before full application to check for compatibility, adhesion, color effect and possible surface changes.
- Carefully cover and protect switches, airbag area, trim strips, seams and adjacent components.
- Do not use on Alcantara, suede, nubuck or aniline leather.
- Do not fully use the steering wheel again until the paint and sealant are completely dry and hardened.
