🛠️ Leather repair & Care in 6 steps – instructions for a perfect result
With this detailed guide, you can professionally clean, repair, dye and protect leather surfaces yourself – ideal for car seats, furniture, clothing, shoes and more.
1️⃣ Leather cleaner – Thorough cleaning before repair
- The Leather cleaner Apply to a sponge – not directly to the leather.
- Clean with foam from seam to seam.
- Repeat as needed.
- Remove dirt and residue with a damp cloth, then allow to dry thoroughly.
- A notice: On older leather, what appear to be stains may actually be color damage – this cannot always be removed.
2️⃣ Leather degreaser – preparation for perfect adhesion
- A clean cloth lightly with Leather degreaser moisten.
- Wipe greasy areas thoroughly – for open-pored leather (e.g. aniline or suede), treat only briefly to avoid stains.
- After degreasing, a Sealing is absolutely necessary, in order to protect the leather again.
3️⃣ Liquid leather – filling damaged areas & model
- Apply liquid leather directly from the tube to the damaged area.
- Spread evenly using a spatula.
- Allow to dry for 1-2 hours – repeat process if necessary.
Important: For larger areas of damage, simply filling the gaps with filler is often insufficient. The surface may need further treatment.
Liquid leather must never be sanded dry. – this damages the repair site.
Instead:
- Method 1: Apply solvent (acetone, nail polish remover) to a latex glove and carefully brush over the dried surface.
- Method 2: After drying, carefully rework with a sanding pad.
Less is more – work with minimal solvent. The area can be reshaped multiple times until the result is satisfactory.
After drying, be sure to Leather color adjust the colors and later seal & maintain.
4️⃣ Leather color – color matching & optical repair
- Apply leather dye evenly from seam to seam using a sponge or paint gun.
- Treat small areas with targeted pressure.
- Dry with a hairdryer between layers.
- Apply several thin coats for high coverage.
- Only dye visibly damaged or discolored areas.
5️⃣ Leather sealing – building up a protective layer
- Apply a thin layer with a soft cloth – do not buff afterwards.
- Allow to air dry.
- In areas subject to heavy use (e.g., driver's seat, armrest), reseal every 3 months.
6️⃣ Leather Protector – Care & Protection for long-term durability
- Apply no sooner than the next day – the leather must be completely dry.
- Apply thinly with a soft cloth and allow to absorb without buffing.
- Ideal for protection against UV radiation, drying out and renewed wear.
- Repeat every 3 months in heavily used areas.
