VILOU – family business for leather care & Leather repair

One idea · one breakthrough · one family brand

Perseverance became the recipe.
Family became a brand.

The story of VILOU begins in 1999 not with a finished company, but with experiments in an apartment, limited resources and a question: How can damaged leather really be preserved permanently?

Chapter I · The Name

Two sons. A name for the future.

The name VILOU is not an artificially developed brand term. It is composed of the names Vito and Louis together – the two sons of the company founder and brand owner Gordon Wetzel.

For VILOU, family is not an added marketing value. It's embedded in the name. VILOU stands for the responsibility of building knowledge not just for the next sale, but for the next generation.

Chapter II · The Beginning

1999: What is now a system began in an apartment

No laboratory. No development team. No financial safety net. In the beginning, there was practical experience with leather, a small workspace, and the firm intention to develop a solution that worked better than what was available at the time.

For over two years, the process involved almost daily experimentation: mixing, applying, drying, bending, rubbing, and starting all over again. Many approaches failed. Some colors provided coverage but weren't flexible enough. Others were elastic but couldn't withstand stress, abrasion, or light over time. Every failure yielded new insights—and became the next step in the development process.

The idea becomes a task

The first experiments and recipes were developed in the home – with limited resources, a lot of manual work and the ambition to solve real problems in leather repair.

2+ years

Failure is part of development

New mixtures were tested almost daily. Flexibility, opacity, adhesion, lightfastness and abrasion resistance had to work simultaneously – not just initially, but permanently.

breakthrough

The recipe works

After more than two years, the crucial formula was achieved: a leather dye that is flexible, lightfast and abrasion-resistant, and adapts to the movements of the leather.

Thinking further

A product becomes a system

Paint alone could not repair dents, cracks, and material losses. Therefore, a flexible repair material was developed: liquid leather as a complement to a more complete repair system.

growth

From apartment to own rooms

With the first orders came the next big step: the move to small commercial premises. Individual trials became repeatable processes, and initial recipes evolved into a growing product system.

Today

Experience leads to responsibility.

From a beginning with minimal financial resources, we have developed our own formulas, professional systems, and over 150,000 customers worldwide. But for us, this is not the end point – it's the foundation for the next stage of our development.

Chapter III · Specialization

The breakthrough became a life's work

Since 2003, we have consistently expanded our independent product and formulation development. Since 2010, we have focused exclusively on the development and further development of leather cleaning, leather care, leather repair, leather dyes, and professional color systems.

Every formula, every product, and every system can be further improved. New types of leather, coatings, applications, and requirements are constantly changing the market. Therefore, our aim is to remain at the forefront of our field, incorporate practical experience, and consistently develop VILOU further.

The first technological breakthrough was therefore not an end point. It became the company's guiding principle: A good solution should never be the final stage of development.

Chapter IV · The Principle

Quality is not a promise. It is a daily decision.

VILOU is deliberately independent and family-run. Development, testing, and decision-making are closely integrated. This allows the practical experiences of customers and professional users to be directly incorporated into the next improvement.

Personal responsibility

Behind our products are people, names and a family – not an anonymous corporate brand.

Rapid development

Short decision-making processes help us to incorporate feedback and to further develop products in a targeted manner.

Proprietary formulas and systems

Cleaners, degreasers, repair materials, leather dyes, sealants and care products are conceived as coordinated systems.

Proximity to private and professional customers

Our solutions are aimed at private users as well as refurbishers, workshops, saddlers, dealers and distributors.

Chapter V · The Founder

Responsibility has a name.

Gordon Wetzel · Founder, Developer and Brand Owner

Behind VILOU are not anonymous structures, but personal responsibility and knowledge accumulated over many years. Gordon Wetzel is developing the brand with the aim of making professional leather technology understandable and reliably accessible to both private and commercial users.

Even today, he works in the company every day. He knows every step of the process – from the delivery and inspection of the raw materials, through development, production, mixing, bottling and quality control, to packaging and shipping to the customer.

VILOU is intended to grow in the long term without losing its origins: independent, family-run and close to the people who work with the products.

From raw materials to the customer: responsibility from a single source

At VILOU, personal responsibility means understanding processes not just from reports or key performance indicators. Gordon Wetzel personally oversees the work on a daily basis and understands the interplay of all the steps that transform raw materials into a reliable product for the customer.

1. Basic materialsDelivery, selection and inspection of the raw materials used.
2. DevelopmentMixing, testing, evaluating and further developing formulations in a targeted manner.
3. ProductionProduction, bottling and quality control of the coordinated systems.
4. To the customerPackaging, shipping, and feedback from practical application.
In-house development. In-house intellectual property.
The developed formulas, product solutions, color systems, and the manufacturing and application knowledge accumulated over many years are the intellectual property of Gordon Wetzel. This know-how forms the independent technical foundation of VILOU and is continuously protected, maintained, and further developed.
Chapter VI · The Meaning

Preserve instead of replacing

A leather seat with color fading, a worn steering wheel, or a leather sofa with minor damage doesn't necessarily need to be replaced. Cleaning, repair, color restoration, and appropriate protection can significantly extend its lifespan.

This is precisely our understanding of sustainability: preserving existing values, using suitable products in a targeted manner, and using only as much material as is actually necessary for a good result.

Developed in Germany. Made for lasting results.

Our product and color systems are developed and manufactured in Germany. Direct access to formulations and manufacturing processes allows us to control quality, further develop proven solutions, and take into account specific practical requirements.

The overall concept also includes the brand and product history of Ledertechnik, which has been built up over many years. It forms the professional foundation on which VILOU is further developed as a central international brand. Leather-Doc is integrated into this brand and corporate structure as a complementary component.

Chapter VII · The Next Generation

The story of VILOU is still at its beginning

Experiments conducted in an apartment led to the development of proprietary formulas. Individual products evolved into coordinated systems. The names Vito and Louis became a brand with the ambition of international growth.

Our goal is to build VILOU into an internationally recognized family brand for leather care, leather repair, leather dyes and professional color systems – faster in development, closer to the customer and consistent in quality.

VILOU should never lose the qualities that made the beginning possible: personal responsibility, perseverance, independence and the willingness to continue working until an idea becomes a reliable solution.

Development began in 1999. Today we are building the brand. For tomorrow, we are passing on knowledge, recipes, and responsibility.
