How much leather colour do I need? Plan with a test area

Estimate leather colour from a representative test area. Allow for colour changes, application technique and tool losses rather than assuming fixed coverage.

Define the area and the objective

A small seat bolster and a complete interior are different projects. Mark the actual areas to be coloured and decide whether you are repairing wear in the existing shade or changing the colour substantially. Include transition areas. Bottle size alone does not establish how large a project a product can cover.

Make a representative trial

Choose a concealed area with a comparable finish and prepare it exactly as you will prepare the repair. Record the area, the number of thin coats and approximate consumption. An unusually absorbent or previously repaired patch is a poor sole reference if the rest of the surface behaves differently.

Use a calculation, not a coverage promise

If a completed 0.1 m² test area used 5 ml, the same application over 0.6 m² would calculate to 30 ml. These are invented example figures, not a product coverage specification. Allow separately for material left in tools, awkward edges, transitions and a reserve. Use the same units throughout the calculation.

Plan repair and protection separately

Estimate filler and top coat separately from the colour, following the damage and product instructions. Extra colour does not fill a deep split or replace preparation. For a major dark-to-light change, check suitability and the expected coating system beforehand. Let the trial dry and assess colour, coverage and feel before deciding the total quantity.

Check product suitability and follow the instructions before use.
