First, determine: What damage has occurred?

A superficial scratch requires different treatment than a through-and-through tear. Do not pull the damaged area apart. Check in good light whether only the color layer is affected or if the leather is completely open.

Mostly repairable by the user

Small, clearly defined cracks in sturdy, smooth leather, the edges of which are not severely stretched or brittle. The area can be backed, filled, and color-matched.

Better to go to the upholsterer

Torn seams, large open tears, severely brittle or deteriorating leather, and cracks at heavily stressed edges. In these cases, the construction or upholstery often needs to be professionally repaired.

Only the surface is damaged?

If the leather is not cut through, smoothing, color refreshing, and sealing are often sufficient. In that case, do not use an unnecessarily large amount of filler.

Leather type unknown?

The following method is intended for pigmented smooth leather. Do not use it on suede, nubuck, velour, Alcantara, or open-pore aniline leather without prior testing.

Repairing a torn leather sofa step by step

Test material compatibility

Always test cleaners, paints, and care products on an inconspicuous area first. Only proceed if the color, feel, and surface remain unchanged.

Thoroughly clean the damaged area

Clean the tear and the surrounding area without tearing the edges further. Then allow the leather to dry completely.

Stabilizing the crack

A through tear requires stable backing. Carefully slide the appropriate repair material under the opening and align the edges without tension. Always follow the instructions for your chosen kit.

Smooth with liquid leather

Starting with color too early

Paint won't hide an unstable crack. First, the damage must be mechanically stabilized and smoothed.

Applying too much liquid leather

More material doesn't automatically make a repair more durable. Thin, controlled layers usually provide a better surface finish.

Select the color tone only on the screen

Screen display, aging, and lighting conditions can alter color perception. Therefore, compare and test the color tone on the furniture itself.

Treating unsuitable types of leather

Products for pigmented smooth leather can visibly alter open-pored or sanded leather. If in doubt, use the repair assistant first.

Can you repair every tear in a leather sofa yourself?

No. Small cracks in sturdy, pigmented smooth leather are often repairable. For torn seams, extensive damage, very brittle leather, or areas subject to high stress, an upholstery or leather specialist should be consulted.

Can I simply paint over the crack with leather dye?

No. Leather dye evens out the color, but it doesn't stabilize an open tear. A through tear must first be backed and then repaired with suitable material.

Is liquid leather suitable for aniline leather or suede?

These instructions are designed for pigmented smooth leather. Aniline, nubuck, suede, or Alcantara leather may be permanently altered in terms of surface and color. Therefore, do not use without testing.

How long does the repair need to dry?
