Matching the gloss of leather

Gloss matching explains why similar leather colours may look different and how to assess the finish on a dry sample.

Meaning

Gloss describes the appearance of reflected light at the surface. Matt, satin and glossy are not colour shades. Similarly coloured areas may look different at an angle when their gloss differs.

During repair

Judge a complete sample, including the suitable top coat, after drying. Compare straight on and obliquely with the original leather. Do not change colour merely because of a reflection. Use an intended finishing system to adjust gloss; arbitrary care oils are not a controlled matching method.

Check product suitability and follow the instructions before use.
