Refreshing the color of a leather jacket

Faded edges, dull sleeves and slight color abrasion can often be specifically refreshed on pigmented smooth leather – without having to re-dye the entire jacket.

First, check the type of leather.

Opaque leather dye is particularly suitable for finished or pigmented smooth leather. With aniline leather, suede, nubuck, or velour, an opaque treatment can alter the typical look and feel. Therefore, test on a hidden area: If a drop of water immediately darkens, the jacket should not be dyed without professional testing.

Well suited

Smooth, surface-dyed leather with abrasion, light edges, or minor color loss.

Check beforehand

Open-pored aniline leather, nubuck, suede, heavily oily or brittle leather.

Not just covering up

Cracks, loose coating and structural damage must be repaired before painting.

This will ensure the color is even.

  1. Clean: Thoroughly remove dust, care products, and everyday dirt.
  2. Degreasing: Prepare collars, cuffs, pocket edges and sleeves with particular care.
  3. Check surface: Remove loose particles and very carefully smooth rough transitions.
  4. Apply paint thinly: Several thin layers produce a more even and elastic result than one thick application.
  5. Dry and protect: Allow each layer to dry completely and then seal appropriately.
Important: Leather dye is not a textile dye. It is intended to refresh the existing finish and must remain thin so that the jacket retains its flexibility.

Avoid common mistakes

  • Apply paint to non-degreased collar or sleeve areas
  • Treating too large an area without a test area
  • use excessively thick layers of paint
  • Wearing or folding a jacket too early
  • Dyeing unsuitable types of leather with an opaque finish

When a repair makes sense

Superficial color wear can usually be refreshed. For deep cracks, torn seams, severely hardened leather, or extensive peeling of the coating, it should first be determined whether a repair is technically feasible. A coat of paint cannot compensate for a lack of stability.
