Make shiny and greasy leather matt again
Problem solving
How to make shiny and greasy leather matte again
A glossy finish on leather is often caused by skin oils, excess care products, and mechanical wear. Whether cleaning is sufficient or a color refresh is necessary depends on whether the surface is merely dirty or already worn.
Why leather becomes greasy or shiny
Hands, clothing, and skin transfer grease and sweat to the surface. At the same time, friction deepens the fine grain. Steering wheels, seat bolsters, armrests, and frequently touched sofa surfaces are particularly affected. Therefore, a shiny spot is not automatically a sign of paint damage.
First check: Illness or wear?
- Superficial shine: The color is even, the grain intact. In most cases, thorough cleaning and degreasing are sufficient.
- Compacted surface: The leather remains smooth and shiny after cleaning. Careful matting may be necessary.
- Color abrasion: Light, grey, or uneven areas indicate that the finish has worn away. In this case, the surface must be thinly re-stained after preparation.
- Cracks or open areas: Repair is necessary before dyeing.
Here's how to proceed correctly.
- Remove dust and loose dirt.
- Clean evenly with leather cleaner, without soaking the leather.
- Carefully degrease the affected area.
- After drying, check if the shine has disappeared.
- Only mattify very carefully if the surface remains dense.
- If there is visible color loss, dab on suitable leather dye in thin layers.
- Seal after complete drying and maintain later.
What you should avoid
Household cleaners, solvents, harsh abrasives, and stiff brushes can permanently damage the leather finish. Excessive use of leather conditioner will also increase the shine. Leather conditioner should be applied sparingly and only after the surface is clean.
When a repair is needed instead of cleaning
If the surface remains lighter, rough, or uneven after cleaning and degreasing, it is usually due to wear and tear. The instructions for a car seat provide further information.
