Lightened seat edges, worn armrests, and dull spots don't automatically mean the leather needs replacing. If the surface is still sound, the color can be refreshed with a matching leather dye and then protected against further wear.
Finding the right leather color View furniture leather colorsBefore dyeing, it must be determined whether the area is merely dirty, faded, or already structurally damaged. First, clean a small area and assess the dry surface in neutral daylight.

Skin oils and product residue can make leather appear darker or greasy. Clean it first and let it dry completely – then the true color will be visible.
Any palpable indentations should be filled before color matching. Refer to the instructions for this. Repairing scratches on a leather sofa.
If the surface cracks, crumbles, or peels off over a large area, leather dye alone is not enough. Have the type of leather and its repairability assessed first.
| appearance | Probable cause | Suitable path |
|---|---|---|
| Light spots on edges and seating surfaces | Mechanical friction and use | Clean, color match, seal |
| Large pale area at the window | UV-induced fading | Check the color of the entire surface and refresh it evenly. |
| Dark, shiny contact points | Skin oils, sweat, or excess skincare products | Clean thoroughly first; do not dye over without testing. |
| Rough, sunken, or open area | Additional material damage | Repair and smooth before painting. |
These instructions apply to pigmented smooth leather. Do not use leather dye on aniline, nubuck, suede, Alcantara, or synthetic leather without testing first. Always test each product on an inconspicuous area.
Don't just clean the light spot, but the entire area – ideally from seam to seam. This will prevent dirt rings and allow you to better assess the actual color.
Remove any grease or care product residue according to the instructions for your chosen product. Smooth rough areas carefully, if necessary, using a suitable material. Allow to dry completely afterwards.
Screen display, age, and lighting conditions can all affect color perception. Test the leather dye on an inconspicuous area and only judge it after it has dried.
Apply the appropriate color sparingly and evenly. Build up coverage in several thin coats, blending the edges smoothly. Applying paint too thickly can alter the feel and texture.
Allow each application to dry according to the product instructions. Check the result under even lighting and only add color where a difference is still visible.
The VILOU Leather Sealant Protects the renewed surface against abrasion and discoloration from clothing. Apply thinly and evenly; do not put any stress on the repaired area until it is completely dry.
If the leather is smooth and closed, no fillers are needed. A suitable leather dye and sealant are the right product solution.
Indentations, cracks or small holes are repaired first and then color-matched.
The leather dye restores the color. The sealant serves a different purpose: it protects the renewed surface, especially at high-wear contact points. Without proper surface protection, new wear and tear can become visible more quickly.

The VILOU Leather Protector It conditions and protects against UV-induced aging. The leather sealant is specifically designed for abrasion protection. Follow the application instructions and timing guidelines.
The new color may adhere unevenly to skin oils, silicones, or skincare residues.
A harsh color edge is often more noticeable. Work carefully with soft transitions or in a sensibly limited area.
A thick layer can alter the texture and feel. Thinner layers are easier to control.
Especially in friction zones, the additional protection of the renewed paint layer is lacking.
On stable, pigmented smooth leather, superficial color abrasion can often be cleaned, color-matched, and sealed at home. Deep or unstable damage must be repaired or professionally assessed beforehand.
No, as long as the surface is smooth and closed.Liquid leather is only needed for noticeable indentations, cracks, or similar material damage.
Not always. Small areas can be blended with soft transitions. For large or highly varied surfaces, working from seam to seam can create a more uniform effect.
Friction, skin oils, unsuitable cleaning, lack of surface protection, or inadequate preparation can promote further abrasion. Areas subject to particularly high wear should be checked and protected regularly.
