What types of scratches occur in car leather?

Not every visible scratch indicates significant material damage. The repair method depends on which layer of leather is affected.

I

Paint scratches

Only the paint layer is damaged. The area appears lighter, but is barely or not at all deepened.

II

Roughened scratch

Any fibers or small edges are raised. The surface must be carefully smoothed before color matching.

III

Deep scratch

The scratch is clearly noticeable. The fingernail catches on it, and the indentation often requires liquid leather.

IV

Cut or incipient crack

The leather surface is open. The damage must be treated like a tear and its stability checked.

Fingernail test: How deep is the scratch?

Run your fingernail across the cleaned scratch without applying too much pressure.

Fingernail doesn't get stuck

The scratch likely affects mostly the surface or paint layer.

Solution: Clean, degrease, carefully smooth, apply leather dye and seal.

Fingernail gets caught

The scratch has a noticeable indentation and therefore requires filling.

Solution: Fill the depression with liquid leather, smooth it, dye it and then protect it.

Danger: If the surface is open, the damaged edges are moving apart, or it is a cut, go to the instructions. "Repairing a tear in a car seat".

Repairing superficial scratches in car leather

This procedure applies to pigmented smooth leather without deep open damage.

01

Clean the damage

Remove any dirt or debris before assessing the scratch.

02

Degreasing

Carefully remove skin oils, silicones and old skincare residues.

03

smooth fibers

Smooth down raised fibers and hard color edges without applying strong pressure.

04

Apply leather dye

Dab on the appropriate color in several thin layers and let it dry.

05

Check transition

Check the color, texture, and gloss level before sealing.

06

Seal

Protect the completely dried paint layer thinly and evenly.

Repair deep scratches with liquid leather

A deep scratch in leather cannot be concealed with dye alone. The indentation will remain visible and can worsen with further wear and tear.

  1. Clean the damaged area and allow it to dry completely.
  2. Thoroughly degrease the leather and carefully smooth out any loose fibers.
  3. Apply liquid leather sparingly into the recess.
  4. Smooth the repair compound and allow it to dry according to the product instructions.
  5. Refill in several thin layers as needed.
  6. Match the repaired area with a suitable leather color.
  7. Seal after it is completely dry.

Common causes of scratches on leather seats

Clothing and metal parts

Rivets, zippers, belts and keys can damage the seat bolster or seat surface.

Getting on and off

Repeated friction can initially cause paint abrasion and later roughened scratches.

Animal claws

Claws can leave multiple parallel scratches as well as raised leather fibers.

Items on the seat

Tools, bags, and other hard objects can cause pressure marks and deep scratches.

Finding a suitable leather color for the scratch

After smoothing or filling, the scratch must be color-matched to the surrounding vehicle leather.

Note the manufacturer's color: Black, beige, and grey also vary depending on the vehicle manufacturer, interior design, and gloss level.

Frequently asked questions about scratches in car leather

Can scratches in car leather be repaired yourself?

Superficial scratches and minor dents can often be repaired by the owner. Open cuts, unstable leather, and safety-relevant areas should be professionally inspected.

When is leather dye sufficient for a scratch?

Leather dye is sufficient if the scratch only affects the color layer and no perceptible indentation needs to be filled.

When do I need liquid leather?

If the fingernail catches noticeably in the scratch, it often indicates a need for filling. The indentation is then filled with liquid leather before the color is matched.

Can scratches caused by pet claws be repaired?

Minor claw scratches can be smoothed and color-matched. Deep scratches and prominently raised leather fibers require careful repair with filler.

Should you cut off raised leather fibers?

Fibers should not be removed indiscriminately, as this can result in the loss of additional material. The area is carefully smoothed and then built up appropriately.

Does a scratch need to be sealed afterwards?

After color matching, sealing is particularly recommended on frequently used seat surfaces and side panels. It protects the renewed surface from abrasion.

Can the scratch become completely invisible?

The result depends on the depth of the scratch, the leather's texture, its color, and the craftsmanship. Superficial scratches can often be repaired very well; however, deep damage may remain easily visible even after repair.
