Semi-aniline leather – identifying, caring for and repairing

Semi-aniline leather combines a largely natural appearance with a light protective layer. It is less delicate than pure aniline leather, but requires more care when cleaning and repairing than heavily pigmented smooth leather.

What is semi-aniline leather?

Semi-aniline leather is treated with transparent or lightly pigmented layers of color. The natural grain and typical characteristics of the hide remain visible, while a thin surface finish offers limited protection. As a result, it usually feels warmer and more natural than heavily pigmented leather.

This is how it can be recognized.

  • The pores and natural structure remain clearly visible.
  • Color differences appear more vibrant than in fully pigmented leather.
  • A drop of water penetrates more slowly than on open aniline leather, but can react more strongly than on coated smooth leather.
  • The surface appears less plasticky and often feels soft.

The drop test should only be performed carefully and in a concealed area. Manufacturer's instructions should always be followed.

Difference to aniline and pigmented leather

Aniline leather It has hardly any surface protection and is very absorbent. Pigmented leather It has an opaque layer of paint and is more robust. Semi-aniline leather It lies in between: more natural than pigmented leather, but somewhat better protected than aniline leather.

Cleaning and care

Semi-aniline leather should only be cleaned with suitable, mild products and minimal moisture. Do not rub stains vigorously. Use care products sparingly and evenly to avoid dark rings. Always test on an inconspicuous area first.

Can semi-aniline leather be repaired or dyed?

Minor color variations and abrasions can be repaired, but require a particularly precise assessment of absorbency, color tone, and gloss level. A standard, opaque repair can alter the natural appearance. For larger areas, high-quality furniture, or unknown finishes, a professional assessment is advisable.

Suitable and unsuitable applications

Our standard leather dyes and repair kits are primarily designed for pigmented smooth leather. They should not be used on semi-aniline leather without prior testing.
