How to use liquid leather correctly: Leather & Repair artificial leather - in black, white, beige, blue, red, green, gray & Brown

Small cracks, scratches or holes in leather and artificial leather do not have to lead to replacement: with liquid leather you restore the structure - and with leather color you bring back the appropriate color. In this article you will get practical step-by-step instructions, typical mistakes and real before/after examples.

What is liquid leather – and what is it ideal for?

Liquid leather is a repair material for smooth leather (and many smooth artificial leather such as PU/vinyl), which smoothes and stabilizes damaged areas. Typical applications are: cracks, scratches, small holes, abrasions and stronger Color abrasion.

Important: Not suitable for Alcantara, Nubuck or Suede. Liquid leather is ideal for smooth leather & most smooth artificial leather (PU/vinyl).

Before/After – real repair examples (leather & artificial leather)

Each example shows the professional process: Repair surface (liquid leather)Adjust color (leather color)Build protection (Sealing).

Example 1: Seat flank – hole

Vorher: Loch in der Sitzflanke – Autoleder beschädigt vor der Reparatur mit Flüssigleder
Before
Nachher: Loch in der Sitzflanke repariert – Ergebnis nach Flüssigleder, Lederfarbe und Versiegelung
After
Professional note: For holes: thinly coat, dry completely, then match the color and seal.

Example 2: Seat – “triangle”/edge

Vorher: Sitzkante beschädigt – Abrieb/Schaden am Autoleder vor der Reparatur
Before
Nachher: Sitzkante repariert – Ergebnis nach Flüssigleder, Lederfarbe und Versiegelung
After
Professional note: Always finish the edges/seat bolsters with sealing - this is where most abrasion occurs.

Example 3: Artificial leather (PU/vinyl) – seat

Vorher: Kunstledersitz (PU/Vinyl) abgenutzt – Schaden vor der Reparatur mit Flüssigleder
Before
Nachher: Kunstledersitz repariert – Ergebnis nach Flüssigleder, Lederfarbe und Versiegelung
After
Professional note: For artificial leather, degreasing is particularly important - only then will the repair hold reliably.

Choice of colors: black, white, beige, blue, red, green, gray, brown

Liquid leather is available in several colors - but you can always achieve the perfect look in the system: liquid leather for the structure + Leather Paint for visible color + Sealer for abrasion resistance. If you are torn between two tones, choose the most neutral/lightest reference range and test on a hidden spot.

⚪ White/Light
Work thinly, degrease cleanly - care residues are particularly visible in light tones.
🟤 Beige/Brown
Daylight photos help: beige tones often appear warmer/cooler under artificial light.
🔵 Blue • 🔴 Red • 🟢 Green • ⚪ Gray
Liquid leather = base. The look depends on the matching leather color - then seal it.

Step-by-step instructions (professional system)

  1. Cleaning: Remove dirt and care residue.
  2. Degreasing: Remove grease/sweat - otherwise no adhesion.
  3. Prepare: Smooth loose edges, sand minimally if necessary.
  4. Liquid leather: Spread thinly, peel off cleanly (preferably several thin layers).
  5. Drying: Allow to dry completely between coats.
  6. Leather color: Dab/apply the matching tone thinly until even.
  7. Sealing: Protective layer for abrasion resistance (steering wheel/seat bolster!).
Steering wheel tip: If you are repairing a leather steering wheel, it is best to use a complete system: Steering wheel repair set .

The 7 most common mistakes – and how to avoid them

1) Apply too thick
→ uneven surface. Solution: layer thinly.
2) Skip degreasing
→ does not last. Solution: degreasing = mandatory.
3) Wrong surface
→ Alcantara/Nubuck. Solution: only smooth leather/PU.
4) Do not dry completely
→ later abrasion. Solution: give it time.
5) Work without leather dye
→ Optics not perfect. Solution: leather paint as a finish.
6) No seal
→ Durability suffers. Solution: seal, especially on the steering wheel.
7) Care too early
→ can be disruptive. Solution: let it harden completely first.
