Repairing leather door trim
Scratches, scuff marks, discoloration, and small tears on a door panel can often be repaired. The crucial step is to first determine the actual material: not every door panel is made entirely of leather.
This guide shows you how to correctly assess the damage, select suitable VILOU products, and avoid unnecessary mistreatment.
What damage has occurred?
Examine the affected area in good light. The appropriate repair depends on whether only the surface paint is damaged or if the material itself has already been compromised.
Paint abrasion and light scuff marks
The surface is smooth, but the color is missing or appears faded. In most cases, cleaning, degreasing, applying a suitable leather dye, and subsequent protection are sufficient.
Scratches and roughened areas
Raised fibers or rough edges must be carefully smoothed. Deep indentations may also require a very thin layer of liquid leather.
Shoe abrasion, jeans or rubber transfers
First, clean the surface and check if it is simply discoloration caused by something else. Only if the original color remains damaged is a color refresh necessary.
Small crack or missing surface
Small, unaffected damages can often be filled. However, peeling, large cracks, or damage to edges and seams should be left to professionals.
Leather, imitation leather or coated plastic?
Modern door panels can be made of several materials. Therefore, the upper section, the armrest, and the door insert do not necessarily have to have the same surface finish.
Coated smooth leather
Suitable for the VILOU repair described here, provided the surface is firm and not extensively detached.
faux leather
Depending on the material composition, a repair may be possible. Always test for adhesion and any changes in an inconspicuous area beforehand.
Coated plastic
Do not treat with leather products without prior testing. Depending on its structure, plastic requires a different repair and bonding system.
Which VILOU products are needed?

Repairing the door panel step by step
Cover the surroundings
Protect adjacent plastic, fabric, metal, and decorative surfaces. Do not allow cleaning or paint products to flood switches, speakers, seams, or crevices.
Clean thoroughly
Remove dirt, skin oils, and foreign abrasion with VILOU Leather Cleaner. Do not soak and allow to dry completely afterward.
View leather cleaners →Degrease the repair area
Only degrease the area that will be repaired or painted. This will remove residues that could impair adhesion.
View leather degreaser →Smoothing rough spots
Carefully smooth any protruding fibers and sharp edges. Do not sand over large areas or too deeply, as this can damage the grain and surface.
Fill small depressions
Apply liquid leather very thinly to the damaged area, smooth it out, and allow it to dry completely. It's better to use several thin layers than one thick layer.
View liquid leather →Apply matching leather dye
Apply the paint thinly and evenly by dabbing. Allow each layer to dry and repeat the process only until the paint coverage is even.
Select leather color →Protect repairs
After complete drying, apply a thin layer of VILOU leather sealant. It provides protection against new abrasion and discoloration.
View leather sealant →Maintain regularly
After complete curing, and regularly thereafter, treat with VILOU Leather Protector. Do not apply directly to a fresh coat of paint.
View Leather Protector →First, check the existing vehicle color.
If possible, first check the color code with the vehicle manufacturer or by reviewing the vehicle's specifications. Then check whether the matching VILOU leather color is already available.A sample color should only be requested if no existing color shade is a clear match.

These mistakes often lead to poor results.
Material only speculated upon
Applying leather products without prior testing to plastic, textiles, Alcantara or open-pored leather can cause visible changes.
Dyeing only over dirt
Leather dye does not adhere permanently to grease, product residue, or silicone. Cleaning and degreasing are not interchangeable steps.
Apply too thickly
Thick layers can obscure contours and grain. Always use cleaners, liquid leather, dyes, and sealants sparingly and with care.
Large detachments cover
An unstable or extensively detached coating cannot be made sound again by simply painting it. Professional repair is required.
When should a specialist company take over?
- In case of large cracks, holes or extensive peeling.
- If the cover comes loose from the door panel or upholstery.
- In case of damaged seams, adhesive joints or edges.
- If there is a side airbag in the affected area.
- In case of unknown material or lack of adhesion in preliminary testing.
- If the door panel is deformed or the substrate is broken.
FAQ on repairing leather door panels
Can any door panel be repaired with leather dye?
No. Many door panels consist of a combination of leather, imitation leather, plastic, and fabric. Leather dye may only be used on a suitable and previously tested surface.
Do I always need liquid leather for a scratch?
No. If the surface is only discolored and still smooth, a color refresh is often sufficient. Liquid leather is only needed if there is a noticeable indentation or if material is missing.
Can shoe scuff marks simply be dyed over?
Shoe scuffs should first be thoroughly cleaned. Often, it's just a superficial discoloration from other materials. Only if a noticeable loss of color remains after cleaning is leather dye advisable.
Where can I get the right leather color?
First, ask the vehicle manufacturer about the interior or leather color, and then check the VILOU categories for car brands. If no suitable color is available, a color can be requested based on a suitable original sample.
Is the repair also suitable for Alcantara?
No. These instructions and the mentioned color and repair products are not intended for use on Alcantara, suede, nubuck, or open-pore aniline leather.
When is sealing used and when is protector used?
The leather sealant is applied thinly after the color refresher has completely dried, providing protection against abrasion and discoloration. The leather protector then serves for regular maintenance and protection against drying out, aging, and UV damage.
