Have furniture leather dye custom-made according to a sample.
The exact color of a leather sofa, armchair, or chair is often no longer available or not clearly described. In this case, a custom VILOU leather color can be matched using a suitable original sample of the furniture leather.
The approved formula is clearly documented and permanently stored in our VILOU database. This ensures that the color shade remains available for future reorders.
When is a sample color for leather furniture advisable?
Leather furniture is subjected to varying degrees of wear and tear over the years. Seats, armrests, and front edges can become lighter, darker, or shinier, while concealed areas largely retain their original color. Therefore, for rare furniture and special colors, a suitable original sample is often the most reliable basis for comparison.
leather sofa and couch
For worn seat surfaces, armrests, front edges and other high-wear areas when no suitable standard color is available.
leather armchair
For recliners, TV chairs, wing chairs and designer furniture with aged, rare or no longer available leather colors.
Leather chairs
For dining room chairs, office chairs and contract furniture where several seating surfaces need to be refinished to a uniform color.
This is how the perfect VILOU furniture leather color is created.
Document furniture and materials
Describe the entire piece of furniture, the damaged areas, and a less worn area for comparison. If available, the manufacturer, model, year of purchase, and leather type will be helpful.
Determine damage and area
Please tell us if there is only paint wear or if scratches, cracks, dents, or open areas also need to be repaired. Please also specify the approximate area to be treated.
Select a suitable original sample
The sample should ideally be at least approximately 2 × 2 cm in size, have an intact top surface and represent the desired target color.
Request detailed sample colors
Use our form for furniture leather. The relevant furniture fields will open automatically. We will first check if the material is suitable and if a matching VILOU color is already available.
Send sample after confirmation
The leather sample should only be sent after we have provided feedback. Do not cut any visible surfaces, load-bearing seams, or stretched upholstery parts.
Develop a custom color formula
A German partner laboratory specializing in leather dye formulas determines the individual formula for the required furniture leather color based on the physical sample.
Save the recipe permanently
VILOU gains access to the created formula. It is uniquely assigned and stored in our own database so that the color shade remains retrievable for later reorders.
Create a test area
Before applying the paint to a large area, it must be tested on an inconspicuous area. The substrate, gloss level, age, and application thickness all affect the visible color effect.
Processing time for the individual prescription
Creating a sample color is not simply a matter of selecting from a color chart. The sample is evaluated, an individual color formula is determined, and documented for reproducible production.
This process can take approximately 14 days. For complex color shades or during periods of high lab workload, processing may take longer. We will inform you about the expected processing time as part of your inquiry.
Where can a suitable leather sample be obtained?
Possible sampling points
- Concealed leather overhang under the sofa or armchair
- Material added behind a removable panel
- Original remnant from the furniture documents
- Sample from the furniture manufacturer or retailer
- Damaged, separately replaceable leather part
Unsuitable samples
- Only the untreated leather backing
- Heavily faded or soiled area
- Surface painted over with a foreign color
- Very small fibers without a discernible top side
- Photo, printout, or digital color value
Do not cut into any visible surfaces, load-bearing seams, or stretched upholstery parts. If no safe sampling point is available, an upholsterer or saddler should assess the feasibility of taking a sample.
What color should the sample represent?
Before removing any material, a decision must be made as to which condition needs to be restored. A heavily used seating area may differ significantly from its original color.
| Goal | Suitable comparison point | Notice |
|---|---|---|
| Restore original furniture tone | Protected, little-used original area | For example, the back or a concealed leather overhang |
| Level only a partial area | Directly adjacent, well-preserved area | Check transitions and gloss level particularly carefully. |
| Unifying several pieces of furniture | Pre-defined reference furniture | Take into account natural differences between hides |
| Complete color refresh | Representative original area | Process the entire visible surface as continuously as possible. |
| Complete color change | Desired reference sample after prior inspection | Coordinate material, substrate color and surface size in advance. |
A color tone – permanently documented
The approved color formula is stored in the VILOU database with a unique identifier. This ensures it remains available even after the original furniture project is completed.
Recipe code
The developed mixture receives a clear and comprehensible assignment.
Reorderable
The saved recipe can be retrieved as a basis for later reorders.
Documented
Color tone, project and existing information remain traceable in the VILOU database.
If the furniture has changed significantly in the meantime, it should be checked again before any subsequent partial repair whether the stored recipe still matches the visible current state.
Color refresh, repair or recoloring?
Color refresher
Suitable for faded, scuffed or uneven-looking surfaces, provided the leather itself is still stable.
Leather repair
In the case of cracks, cuts and depressions, the damaged area is repaired, smoothed and prepared before the paint is applied.
View liquid leather →Complete color change
A significant color change is more complex than a simple refresh. The material, substrate, area, and required amount of product must be checked beforehand.
How much furniture leather dye is needed?
| Application | guideline value | Notice |
|---|---|---|
| Small repair or single edge | approximately 30–50 ml | Depending on the substrate and number of layers |
| seat or armrest | approximately 50–100 ml | Always work from boundary to boundary |
| leather armchair | approximately 150–250 ml | Consider the size and the areas to be treated |
| leather sofa or couch | approximately 250–500 ml or more | Large furniture and color changes require more material. |
| Several chairs or contract furniture | Project-specific calculation | Determine total area and reserve in advance |
These quantities are for guidance only. Leather type, absorbency, substrate color, extent of repair, and application method can significantly alter actual consumption.

Frequently asked questions about furniture leather color by sample
Can furniture leather color be mixed based solely on a photograph?
Photos are helpful for preliminary inspection, but are not sufficient for a reliable color formula. Lighting, camera, and screen all affect color representation. A suitable physical leather sample is required for formula development.
How large does the leather sample need to be?
The sample should ideally be at least approximately 2 × 2 cm in size and have a clean, intact top surface.
Can I take the sample from under the sofa?
Many pieces of furniture have hidden leather overhangs underneath. However, removing these must not damage any seams, fastenings, or visible surfaces. If in doubt, an upholsterer should inspect the area.
How long does it take to create the sample color?
Developing a customized formula can take approximately 14 days. Processing may take longer for complex color shades or during periods of high laboratory workload.
Can I reorder the same furniture color later?
Yes. The approved formula is clearly documented and stored in the VILOU database. This ensures it remains accessible for future reorders.
Can any leather sofa be dyed?
Not every furniture material is suitable for the same color system. Pigmented smooth leather and many synthetic leathers can be treated after prior testing. Aniline leather, suede, nubuck, and microfiber require different procedures.
Is leather dye sufficient for a tear?
No. A tear or indentation must first be repaired and smoothed. The leather dye is then applied for visual matching.
Does the paint need to be protected afterwards?
Heavily used seats and armrests should be sealed according to the product instructions and then maintained as needed.
Request a custom VILOU furniture leather color
