Leather lexicon: Recognizing, cleaning and caring for aniline leather
VILOU Leather Lexicon
Identifying, cleaning and caring for aniline leather
Aniline leather has a largely open, natural surface. Grain patterns, pores, and irregularities remain visible. This high-quality type of leather feels warm and soft, but is sensitive to water, grease, light, and unsuitable cleaning agents.
determine aniline leatherTypical characteristics of aniline leather
Open surface
The natural skin structure remains visible and is not covered by an opaque layer of pigment.
Warm touch
The material feels soft, natural, and less like plastic.
absorbency
A small drop of water can darken and slowly soak in.
patina
Light, use, and skin contact visibly alter the surface.
Perform the water drop test only when covered
Apply a tiny drop to an inconspicuous area. If it soaks in and darkens the leather, this indicates an open or poorly protected surface. This test is only a guideline and does not replace a proper material analysis.
Aniline leather, semi-aniline leather and pigmented leather
| Leather type | surface | sensitivity |
|---|---|---|
| Aniline leather | open, of course | high |
| Semi-aniline leather | lightly protected | medium |
| Pigmented leather | covered | comparatively robust |
Care for aniline leather gently
- Remove dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth.
- Use only expressly suitable products.
- Never apply cleaners to large areas without testing them first.
- Avoid direct sunlight, heating, and persistent moisture.
- Do not rub stains and do not use household remedies.
Can aniline leather be dyed or repaired?
Applying a localized, opaque leather dye alters the open look and feel of pigmented smooth leather. Therefore, standard repair dyes for pigmented smooth leather are not automatically suitable. For stains, fading, scratches, or cracks, it should first be determined whether to preserve the patina, apply a specialized aniline treatment, or have the leather professionally restored.
Not suitable for standard repair procedures
Do not clean, degrease, sand, or over-dye aniline leather like pigmented automotive leather. This can result in dark edges, shiny spots, and permanently altered feel.
Typical areas of application
- high-quality leather sofas and armchairs
- natural bags and accessories
- Selected premium vehicle equipment
- Designer furniture with visible natural structure
