Repairing the side bolster of a car seat
The side bolster of the driver's seat is subjected to wear and tear every time someone gets in and out. Paint abrasion, rough patches, scratches, and small cracks therefore often appear first at the entry edge. With proper diagnosis, the surface can be cleaned, repaired, color-matched, and then protected if the damage is suitable.
Why is the side bolster particularly often damaged?
When getting in and out of the car, clothing, belts, rivets, and body weight rub against the outer seat bolster. The original protective layer gradually becomes thinner. Subsequently, the paint can rub off, and the surface can become rough or cracked.
Mechanical abrasion
Repeated friction first wears away the protective layer and later the paint layer.
Grease and product residue
Skin oils, unsuitable care products and silicones can impair the adhesion of a subsequent repair.
Material fatigue
Deep creases, open seams, or damaged foam are more than just surface damage.
Damage check: What does your seat bolster need?
Paint abrasion without indentation
If the area is smooth and only lighter or unevenly colored, thorough preparation followed by color refreshing and sealing is usually sufficient.
Rough spot or light scratch
Loose fibers and raised edges are carefully smoothed. The area is then thinly color-matched and protected.
Small crack with depression
A suitable small crack can be filled with thin layers of liquid leather. Afterwards, color matching and sealing are necessary.
Open seam or major damage
Damage to seams, airbag areas, the substructure, or foam should be handled by a saddler. Liquid leather is not a substitute for a load-bearing repair.
First determine whether it's leather or imitation leather.
Many vehicle seats consist of a combination of different materials. Seat centers may be made of leather, while side bolsters or backrests are made of coated synthetic leather. A visual inspection alone is not always sufficient.
- First test the product on a hidden area to check for color and material compatibility.
- Only process suitable pigmented smooth leather and appropriately coated synthetic leather.
- Do not use on Alcantara, suede, nubuck or open-pore aniline leather.
- If the material is unknown, consult the manufacturer or a specialist company before repairing it.
Repairing the side panel in six steps
- Clean Clean the entire repair area and the surrounding area with VILOU leather cleaner and allow it to dry completely.
- Degreasing Remove grease, silicone, wax, and old care products with VILOU Leather Degreaser. This step improves the adhesion of subsequent products.
- Smooth the surface Smooth rough edges and loose surface fibers very carefully with a suitable sanding pad. Do not sand unnecessarily hard.
- fill in depressions Only fill small, palpable cracks or nicks with a thin layer of VILOU liquid leather. Allow each layer to dry completely and repeat if necessary.
- Apply matching leather dye Apply leather dye thinly and evenly with a sponge. Several thin coats will give a more controlled result than one thick layer.
- Seal and maintain After the leather has completely dried, apply a thin layer of VILOU Leather Sealer. It protects against further abrasion and color transfer. Afterwards, VILOU Leather Protector can be used for conditioning and UV protection.

Select the appropriate car leather color
Black automotive leather is not identical across all manufacturers. Beige, gray, red, and brown tones also vary depending on the manufacturer, model, trim level, and type of leather. Therefore, do not use just any similar-looking shade without first checking it.
- If possible, ask the vehicle manufacturer about the color designation.
- Check the appropriate VILOU manufacturer category.
- Compare the color tone with a hidden area of the original.
- Only request a sample color if no suitable shade is available.
Avoid typical mistakes
Wrong shade
Don't automatically order "black" or a similar-looking shade. Check the manufacturer's color first.
Insufficiently degreased
Remaining care product and grease residues can lead to poor adhesion and an uneven surface.
Too much liquid leather
Use liquid leather only for recesses and apply it thinly. It is not suitable for covering large areas or as a replacement for leather.
Paint applied too thickly
Several thin layers dry in a more controlled manner and better preserve the natural structure.
Sealing forgotten
The heavily used entry edge requires suitable abrasion protection after dyeing.
Stressed too early
Do not use the repaired area again until it is completely dry, and take extra care of it during the first few days.
When does the side panel need to be taken to a specialist?
Self-repair is suitable for limited surface damage to suitable smooth or synthetic leather. A saddler should handle it if:
- a seam is open, torn, or has a safety-relevant issue,
- the side airbag area is affected
- Leather or imitation leather is largely missing.
- the foam is visible or damaged
- the cover is loose or detaches from the substrate,
- the damage continues to worsen under stress.
Frequently asked questions about repairing car seat side bolsters
Can I repair paint wear on the seat bolster myself?
Yes, limited color abrasion without structural damage can often be prepared, color-matched and sealed on suitable pigmented smooth or artificial leather.
Do I need liquid leather for every type of damage?
No. Liquid leather is only needed for small, noticeable cracks, nicks, or indentations. For simple color abrasion, a color refresh after thorough preparation is usually sufficient.
Which leather color matches my car?
First, check the color code with the vehicle manufacturer and then look in the corresponding manufacturer's category. Only if no matching color code is available there should you request a sample color.
Can black car leather always be dyed a deep black?
No. Car manufacturers use different shades of black and gloss levels. The actual leather color used should be checked before ordering.
Can I repair a torn airbag seam myself?
No.Airbag and safety seams must not be covered or functionally altered with liquid leather, adhesives, or paint. Consult a qualified specialist for such work.
Is the instruction manual suitable for Alcantara or suede?
No. The products described are not intended for use on Alcantara, nubuck, suede, or open-pore aniline leather.
